What we collect, and when
How You Interact With Our Consumer Disaster Intelligence Products
The numbered sections below are intended to help you more easily understand how we process Personal Data when you interact with and connect with us about our consumer disaster intelligence products.
1. On the Web
Whether you are checking current conditions, monitoring an earthquake, hurricane, tsunami, wildfire, severe weather, winter hazard, or another event, we are here to help you stay informed. When you check our forecast on the web (on your computer or mobile browser), we collect Personal Data, including your Internet Protocol (IP) address, device information, identifiers, preferences, and your location information. We do this to provide you with the weather outside and disaster and disaster- and weather-related news, well-being insights, content, and to advertise to you.
2. On Our Mobile Apps
Hazards and changing conditions can affect you wherever you go. Having access to the daily and future forecasts, information on your disaster and weather interests, disaster- and weather-related well-being tips, and many other great mobile app features can help you plan your day. When you explore our mobile apps, we collect Personal Data, including device information, identifiers, interests, and location information, including precise location (aligned with your consent) and location(s) you select.
With your permission, we also collect motion and accelerometer readings from your device. These feed the shake detection described in section “How we use AI”: a phone that is being shaken by an earthquake is, in effect, a seismic sensor, and enough of them in the same seconds tell us that something is happening before an official bulletin does. You can withdraw this permission in your device settings, and the app keeps working without it.
3. Viewing and Engaging with Our News & Stories
Natural hazards and changing environmental conditions constantly impact our world, which is why we offer editorial content about severe weather, climate, and other weather-connected, well-being and lifestyle topics. When you read our articles, watch our videos, or engage with other editorial content, we collect Personal Data, including your IP address, device information, and location information, to deliver relevant content for your area. We also collect information about the content you view and how you interact with it to improve our editorial offerings, for targeted advertising, and to provide you with a more personalized experience. This information helps us understand what topics interest you most so we can deliver more of what you value. When you want to add your voice to a story through commenting, your display name is also captured and displayed.
Don't forget: Display names and comments are public, so make sure to exclude identifiable information and see the Community Guidelines and our Terms of Use. If you submit content to us (through email, text or audio message, or by responding to online content), your content is governed by our Terms of Use.
If you see advertising related to content you are viewing, know that these ads are generally displayed to anyone who views the content (often referred to as “contextual advertising”).
4. Creating an Account and Using an Ad-Free Subscription
You really love planning your day with us and have decided to create an account for a more personalized experience (Welcome!). When you create an account, we collect Personal Data, including your first name, email address, and password, to get you started. For even more personalization, you can also optionally provide other information, including your gender, display name, photo, and select a number of interests to tailor your experience. You can always adjust these selections in your account settings.
As available, we permit you to create (or sign in to) an account using your existing third-party platform account (for example, through Google or Apple).
If you don't want ads and want our most advanced features, you can sign up for our ad-free subscription offerings – with us directly or through the app store. When you sign up with us directly, we ask for your billing address and payment information.
5. Keeping Up With Hazards and More - Notices & Alerts
When a hazard is developing or approaching, timing is everything when it comes to safety information. Weather alerts based on your current location are just one of many types of notifications available to you. When you enable location-based alerts, we use Personal Data, including your GPS location data or saved locations, to provide you with real-time notifications about hazard and weather conditions that may affect you. These warnings and hazard alerts are designed to help you prepare for changing conditions and potential emergencies.
Beyond hazard and emergency alerts, with your consent, we also send you notifications about:
- Product updates to improve your hazard-tracking experience;
- Breaking news stories related to hazard events and climate; and
- Special offers we think you might find useful.
You can adjust your notification preferences anytime by:
- Turning off specific notification types in your settings within the Services;
- Adjusting location and notification permissions in your device settings; or
- Deleting the application.
6. Interacting with the Services
We're always working to improve your experience with our Services. When you interact with product features, respond to surveys, or participate in user testing, we collect Personal Data, including information about your preferences, opinions, and how you use our Services. This includes your responses to questions, feature usage patterns, and time spent on different sections of our Services. We use analytics tools to understand these interactions, which help us make our Services better for you. If you participate in our surveys, we collect additional information you choose to provide.
7. Our Email Marketing and Newsletters
If you are subscribed to our consumer email marketing or newsletter communications, you can unsubscribe by:
- Clicking “Unsubscribe” in the footer of the emails you receive from us;
- Updating preferences in your account settings; or
- Requesting data deletion (see section “Your rights over your data” for instructions).
It may take a few days for your opt-out preferences to take effect. We're committed to following industry guidelines and providing you with a personalized experience aligned with your choices.
If you submit content to us (through email, text or audio message, or by responding to online content), your content is governed by our Terms of Use.
8. Connecting a Weather, Air Quality, Seismic, or Other Sensor
By connecting a compatible weather station, air quality sensor, seismic sensor, camera, or other supported sensor to PinQast, you become part of a broader disaster-intelligence network. By connecting your sensor device to your account, you consent to our use of the observations and related metadata in our Services, subject to this Privacy Policy and applicable law.
9. PinQast on the Road - In-Vehicle Infotainment App
Weather conditions can change as you drive, making it essential to stay informed while on the road. PinQast in-vehicle infotainment app delivers real-time forecasts, hazard and weather alerts, and route-specific conditions directly to your vehicle's dashboard. When you use our in-vehicle app, we collect Personal Data, including vehicle information, device identifiers, your precise location, and selected destinations. We use this information to provide you with relevant hazard and hazard and weather alerts and safety alerts along your route.
PinQast in-vehicle app does not contain advertisements, and your Personal Data is not used for advertising purposes.
Please note that this Privacy Policy does not apply to data collection by your vehicle manufacturer or provider.
10. PinQast on Your Apple TV - App for Apple TV
As you explore the world's weather from your couch, PinQast app for Apple TV provides video coverage of weather stories from across the globe and, depending on your location, forecast videos for your city. When you use our app for Apple TV, we collect data that could be considered Personal Data (including IP address and your device's country and language settings), but this data is not linked or connected to an identifiable person. We use this information for network connection purposes and to show you relevant disaster- and weather-related content.
Please note that this Privacy Policy does not apply to data collection by Apple (Apple and Apple TV are trademarks of Apple Inc.).
11. PinQast on Your Amazon Alexa Device - Skill for Amazon Alexa
Accessing hands-free disaster, weather, geological, and hazard information is a breeze with PinQast skill for Amazon Alexa. When you use our skill, we collect data that could be considered Personal Data, including device country and postal code, but this data is not linked or connected to an identifiable person.
Please note that this Privacy Policy does not apply to data collection by Amazon (Amazon, Alexa, and all related marks are trademarks of Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates).
12. Contests
We sometimes host contests for a chance to win prizes. When you enter a contest, we collect Personal Data, including your name and contact information. When entering a contest, you agree to the contest terms, including but not limited to our use of your information to determine winners, distribute prizes, and promote the contest. In some locations and cases, winners' names and contest entries are published as part of announcing results.
13. Customer Support Communications
When you communicate with us to share feedback or get support, we collect Personal Data, including name, email address, phone number, and other information collected to provide support.
This data is used to provide support and resolve your inquiries.
How we use AI
We use artificial intelligence and statistical modelling for one purpose: to read hazard data and turn it into a forecast. Our seismic, tropical cyclone, flood, wildfire, and weather models look for patterns across large volumes of observations and estimate what is likely to happen next, where, and when. That is what powers the projections you see in the Services.
What the models are trained and run on:
- public catalogues and feeds from official sources, such as seismic networks, national weather and warning services, wildfire and river-gauge agencies;
- observations from sensors connected to PinQast by their owners, as described in section “What we collect, and when”;
- readings from the sensors in the phones of people who allowed it, and reports contributed by users about what they felt or saw; and
- the outcome of our own past forecasts, which we score against what actually happened in order to calibrate the models.
Where Personal Data comes into it, and where it does not:
- Detection needs the individual reading. When your device contributes a sensor measurement — a shake picked up by the accelerometer, for example — that measurement reaches us tied to the device it came from, with its time and its location. A single reading is meaningless without knowing where and when it happened, and telling a real tremor from a phone falling off a table depends on comparing readings from nearby devices in the same seconds. While that is being processed, the reading is linked to your device, and to your account if you have one.
- Training and calibration do not. Once an event has been detected, what goes into training and calibrating the models is the aggregated picture — how many devices, in which areas, at which intensity — not who those devices belong to.
- The forecast is for a place, not for a person. Location is used to tell you what a model says about where you are or the places you saved. The model output itself is computed for an area.
- No decisions about you. We do not use AI to make decisions about you that produce legal or similarly significant effects, and we do not build profiles of you for advertising purposes.
Our approach to AI is guided by principles, including:
- Thoughtful and Responsible: We review our uses of AI, including identifying and evaluating potential impacts.
- Transparency and Explainability: We aim to make the workings of our AI systems understandable and explainable, and we publish how our models score against the events they tried to predict.
- Human Oversight: We seek to maintain appropriate levels of human oversight and control over AI-driven processes and decision-making.
- Privacy and Data Protection: We prioritize the protection of Personal Data and implementation of AI systems that account for relevant privacy requirements. We value and respect the confidentiality and security of personal and sensitive data.
We regularly review our AI practices to ensure they remain fair and transparent.
Cookies, trackers and your choices
We strive to provide you with a personalized experience. Here's how we tailor our Services to you:
Data Collection Technologies
In addition to the data you provide directly to us (as outlined in the above sections), we and our partners use various technologies to track usage and personalize your experience. These include:
- Cookies: Small text files stored on your device to remember preferences and track usage across different websites.
- ETags: Labels that websites use to identify when your web browser has accessed a page before, which help websites track if you've visited a page previously and what information you've already shared.
- JavaScript: Programming language that websites use to collect information about how you interact with them, which allows websites to track your clicks, scrolls, and other actions.
- Local storage: Browser or device storage, saves user preferences and other data for a smoother experience.
- SDKs: Toolkits that apps and software use to collect data about how you use them. They provide developers with pre-made code and tools to gather information about your activity.
- Web beacons: Tiny graphic images used to understand how you interact with content.
These tools (which we'll refer to, collectively, as “cookies and trackers”) help us understand your interactions with our Services and track you across different websites for various purposes, such as cross-contextual behavioral advertising (CCBA), commonly referred to as “targeted advertising.”
Please note that cookies and trackers may be used within our marketing and newsletter emails to track your interactions with our Services and when emails are opened.
Your Cookie and Tracker Choices
Depending on your location, you may have control over non-essential tracking technologies used on our websites through the Services (for example, in the EU/EEA/UK). You can also visit your browser's settings to see what you can control from there. We categorize our cookies and trackers as follows:
- Essential Technology cookies/trackers allow access to information stored in your browser needed to perform necessary functions - including securing the connection to our websites, inferring approximate location data of your internet connection to provide you hazard and hazard and weather forecasts for your general area, and optimizing site performance.
- Functional Technology cookies/trackers allow permission for our websites to remember choices you make and collect information about how you use the Services in order to improve our disaster intelligence offerings and business. They enable us to provide you with the most accurate forecasts while also measuring performance, and improving our weather and forecast products and our Services. Additionally, they allow for social media platforms to collect data needed to display editorial articles and videos on our Services.
- Targeted Advertising cookies/trackers allow our advertising partners to deliver ads and content personalized to your interests, resulting in a more relevant browsing experience. We learn about your interests from your activity on our websites, as well as from other websites you use.
- Geographically Relevant Advertising cookies/trackers enable the use and sharing of location information embedded within your IP address for advertising purposes. This enables our advertising vendors to show you ads related to your current location, creating a more relevant browsing experience.
See section “Europe and the UK (GDPR)” for information about data processing purposes and legal basis.
Advertising Vendors
We work with Advertising Vendors and our advertisers (including their vendors) to serve relevant ads and optimize our Services. We and our Advertising Vendors may use the following techniques:
- Advertising identifiers: Collecting information about usage of the mobile apps through advertising identifiers to support or deliver personalized advertising. An advertising identifier is a randomly-generated alphanumeric code associated with your device. Advertising identifiers provide advertisers a way to identify your device without using a permanent device identifier, such as serial number. On a website, cookie IDs can be used in this same manner.
- Combining data: Merging information from various sources to better understand your interests. This includes ingesting data about you from external sources and using identity graphs to match various identifiers (including hashed email addresses, defined below).
- Cross-device tracking: Tracking your activity across your other websites or devices to provide a consistent experience.
- Hashed email addresses: Converting email addresses into an irreversible string of characters (hashes) that allow for ad targeting and measurement across platforms without exposing your actual email address.
Your Advertising Choices
You have choices over how your Personal Data is used for advertising:
- Browser settings: We encourage you to visit the help or settings area of your browser to manage cookies and local storage.
- Device settings: You can control advertising identifiers on mobile devices through device/operating system settings.
- Industry opt-outs: Use tools provided by the Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA), Digital Advertising Alliance of Canada (DAAC), and European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance (EDAA) to opt out of personalized ads from multiple vendors.
- Opt-outs: Depending on your location, you may have opt-outs available through the Services.
- Opt-out signals: We will honor GPC (Global Privacy Control) signals in the U.S. when received from your browser. To learn more about Global Privacy Control, you can visit https://globalprivacycontrol.org. As Do Not Track is not a universally-recognized browser signal, we do not recognize this on our consumer disaster intelligence products.
- Vendors: You can visit our Data Vendors page to review the vendors we share data with and view their privacy policy and opt-out mechanisms where applicable. In some countries, you may also be asked to review and make choices about Vendor activity prior to accessing our Services.
Some things to remember:
- If you change your settings on individual web browsers or ad networks, these settings will not necessarily carry over to other browsers or ad networks, and you may still see our ads.
- Opting out doesn't mean you'll stop seeing ads – they just might not be as relevant to you. Some ads are displayed based on the content you view. This is often referred to as “contextual advertising.” As these ads are not targeted to you individually, your opt-out choice will not apply to them.
Analytics Vendors
We collaborate with Analytics Vendors to understand how you interact with our Services and to improve your experience. These partners help us track:
- Usage patterns and trends: Collecting and analyzing data about how you use our Services, similar to tracking usage patterns to identify seasonal trends.
- Performance measurement: Monitoring how our Services function across different devices and networks.
- Feature effectiveness: Evaluating which features are most valuable to users, helping us prioritize improvements.
- Audience insights: Aggregate user data to better understand preferences and needs; the insights generated remain at an aggregate level.
- Surveys and user testing: Collecting direct feedback and observations through optional participation in questionnaires and feature evaluations to guide product improvements.
- Conversion tracking: Measuring actions taken after viewing content or advertisements to determine effectiveness.
Technology Vendors
We partner with Technology Vendors to help deliver and maintain our Services. These specialized partners assist us with:
- Data storage and management;
- Customer service support;
- Audience research and product development;
- Content receipt, creation, delivery, and functionality; and
- Mapping services for location-based features.
These vendors receive the data necessary to perform their specific functions. The vendors commit to follow data protection standards when processing Personal Data. This collaboration allows us to provide and maintain the quality of our Services across all our features.
Data Providers
We partner with Data Providers to enrich our data with details, including but not limited to:
- Consumer finance behavior, interests, and purchases
- Demographics about you and your household
- Hashed email address
- Home address
We use this data to better understand you, personalize our Services, and provide targeted advertising.
Third-Party Services and Links
We may provide you with partner promotions/services or include connections to other websites, apps, or platforms.
- Partner Promotions/Services: When we offer you third-party promotions or services, you are free to choose whether we share your information with these partners. It's important to remember that partner data practices follow their own privacy policies.
- External Connections: Our Services may link to other websites/apps, contain framed content, or interact with third-party platforms (like mobile operating systems or device manufacturers). These connections operate under their own privacy policies.
- Social Sharing Features: Where available, social sharing features allow you to share our content from our Services, on social media platforms. Use of our social sharing features may allow a third party to collect and/or use information about you. If you use social sharing features, information you post or make accessible may be publicly displayed by the third-party service.
We recommend reviewing third-party privacy policies before engaging with their services, as we cannot control how they collect, use, or protect your information once you venture beyond our Services.
Location Data
We collect different types of location data depending on your device settings. When you access our Services, we may detect your approximate location (e.g., your city or zipcode) through your IP address to provide local weather, news, content, and offers. For more precise forecasts, we may use your specific GPS location (precise location), but only if you first give us consent. You can also add and save a location directly (including address, zip/postal code, or city) when you use our Services. If you'd rather not share your precise location, you can always opt out of this sharing, though you will still receive content based on your last searched location (we call this your "contextual location").
We and our vendors may use your location data (approximate or precise) to deliver relevant advertisements and for various other purposes as we outline in the table in “What each kind of data is used for”. You can adjust your location settings anytime through your device.
How long we keep it, and where
We'll hold onto your Personal Data for as long as necessary to provide you with our Services and to improve them. However, legal obligations may require us to extend that timeframe. Outdated data that no longer requires personal identification may be de-identified and kept indefinitely in a way that no longer identifies you, but helps us as we continue to improve our Services.
Our Services are supported by servers and people located both inside and outside of the United States. Subject to applicable law, by using our Services and providing information to us, you consent to the transfer to and processing of information in the United States and other jurisdictions. If you're based in the European Union (EU)/European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom (UK), or another region outside the United States, your data may be processed in the United States or other jurisdictions where the data protection and privacy laws may not offer the same level of protection as those in the country where you reside. Where necessary under applicable law, we may employ appropriate cross-border transfer methods governing Personal Data.
Your rights over your data
We are thrilled that you check the hazard and weather forecast using our Services and understand if you want more details on what we collect, or if you want to delete your information (although we really do hope you stay!). Your data rights are subject to all application limitations, exemptions, and exceptions as are provided under applicable law. If you continue to use our Services after data deletion, we will resume collecting Personal Data for the various business purposes identified in this Privacy Policy, including personalization.
It's important to note that, as permitted by law to provide our Services, there is some data we do not delete as part of the request. This includes data we use to:
- Complete transactions requiring data such as billing information or transaction histories;
- Respond to customer support inquiries;
- Detect and prevent security incidents and identify and repair errors that impair functionality of our Services (e.g., log files, error diagnostics); and
- Comply with legal obligations.
Your account, and any ad-free subscriptions associated with your account that you purchased with us directly, will be deleted as part of the process when you request data deletion while signed into your account. This means you won't be able to sign in unless you create a new account, and you won't be able to access an associated subscription purchased with us directly. For more information, see our Terms of Use.
There may be additional rights in your location; see section “Where you live changes things” for more details.
If you have questions or compliance concerns about our processing of data related to your use of the Services, you can contact us through the methods detailed in section “How to reach us.” If you have continued concerns, you can also reach out to your relevant data protection authority.
Please refer to section “Data we collect outside the consumer apps” for information about how to exercise your data rights for data not related to our consumer disaster intelligence products.
We do not track minors
We do not knowingly collect Personal Data from children under age 18. If you become aware that we have collected Personal Data from a specific child, please notify us promptly through the methods detailed in section “How to reach us.” If we become aware that a child under age 18 has provided us with Personal Data without parental consent, we will take steps to remove their Personal Data.
How we protect your data
We take our data stewardship seriously. We have put in place physical, electronic, and managerial procedures intended to help protect your data. For example, where appropriate, we use methodologies such as encryption when transmitting your data. However, like all digitally-connected internet-based things, the security of your information is not guaranteed, and the sharing and transmission to us is at your own risk.
When we share without asking you
There are some scenarios where we, our affiliates, or our vendors may share your data without your express permission:
- Pursuant to judicial or other government subpoenas, warrants, or orders, or otherwise to comply with law;
- Where we believe an individual's rights, property, or safety or security is at risk;
- If we find that your actions violate our Terms of Use or any of our other legal rights;
- Where otherwise required or permitted by applicable law (which may include a lawful access request by U.S. or foreign courts, governments, or law enforcement agencies); or
- If we buy, merge, reorganize, or sell any business or assets, Personal Data and non-Personal Data will likely be disclosed or transferred as part of the transaction.
When we change this policy
As our business changes and the legal environment evolves, we change this Privacy Policy periodically. If we decide to change this Privacy Policy, we will post those changes here prior to the time they take effect. If we make material changes to the way we use Personal Data, we may notify you through the Services.

U.S. state privacy laws
If you are a U.S. resident, we additionally process your Personal Data in accordance with applicable U.S. state data privacy laws. California residents, please see section “California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) Notice.”
Please note that state laws vary, and additional states are actively passing consumer data privacy laws. We will update our disclosures, processes, and this notice as applicable laws and rules are finalized.
As described in the “What each kind of data is used for” section, we collect and use certain information, some of which may be considered Personal Data, in order to operate the Services. Depending on the laws applicable to our processing of Personal Data, you may have the ability to exercise the rights listed below. Please see below for a summary of our privacy practices in the U.S.
Opt Out
Certain state data privacy laws define the terms “sell” and “sale” broadly to include the sharing of Personal Data for valuable consideration, even if money is not exchanged. We allow Advertising Vendors to use your Personal Data for certain purposes other than providing and improving advertising services for our Services (described in section “What each kind of data is used for”), and such may be considered a “sale” under certain state data privacy laws.
Certain state data privacy laws define targeted advertising as displaying advertisements to a specific audience based on preferences or interests.
See below for links that can be used to exercise your right to opt out on our Services:
Web
- Use the Privacy Settings page to manage your opt-out for your current location on pinqast.com.
- Additionally, we recognize and honor Global Privacy Control (“GPC”) on the sites when you are located in the U.S. When GPC is enabled on a supported browser, we will treat it as an opt-out preference signal. The GPC signal will apply to your browser and will take precedence over any previously provided consent choice on our Services. If you have an account and are signed in, the GPC enabled signal will be associated to your account as an “opted-out” selection and apply to all browsers and/or devices you use to access our Services while you are signed in to your account.
Mobile Apps
- Navigate to “Privacy Settings” or “Your Privacy Rights” (this will differ depending on the app and your location) in the app menu to manage your opt-out for each mobile app and your current location.
Users with active ad-free subscriptions are automatically opted out of targeted advertising and the sale of Personal Data while using the subscription on the applicable Service(s).

Once we receive your appeal, we will notify you in writing within 45 days (or such other time required under applicable law, if sooner) of any action taken or not taken in response to the appeal, including a written explanation of the reasons for the decision.
If your appeal is denied, a list of U.S. state attorneys general is available to contact. *

If you choose to exercise any of these rights, we will not deny goods or services to you or provide different quality of services, unless that difference is reasonably related to the value provided by your data. *

If your state's privacy law provides the right to designate an authorized agent, you can designate an authorized agent to submit an opt-out request on your behalf. Users and authorized agents may contact us through the methods detailed in section “How to reach us” for further instructions.
